The Five Alive Philosophy is in sync with a world in flux. We are learning to make small – and large – adjustments in our lifestyle, and that’s the message in Five Alive too. Take a few moments to focus on you, your self-care and the care of people close to you. Empathy is in high demand – we need it and those around us do too. So, how do we apply this to our real world?
Finance – If you don’t have an emergency savings fund, get one started today. Small is better than none, and small deposits are better than $0. Review your fixed costs, those expenses that would continue even if you lost your job. Can these expenses be reduced? How about those discretionary expenses – the things you want? Is it time to re-evaluate?
Food – Yes, there are some concerns about scarcity and empty shelves, but for most of us, it’s a good time to clear out simple carbs from our pantry – they’re usually white. White flour, rice and sugar – and processed foods that are made with these ingredients. You may crave these when you’re stressed and anxious, but they are working against your immune system because they have little to no nutritional value. This includes clear liquids too – like vodka. Keep this in check too. Fun, but no nutritional value. Fill up on fruits, vegetables and whole grains – then make a donation to the local food bank to help others.
Fitness – Gyms may be closed, but the walking and biking trails are open. Your bike misses you. Bring it outside, or set it up inside on a trainer to get some miles in. Start being curious and learning about those topics that you had on your wish list. There’s time now. Brain and body fitness are critical to your health and for boosting your immune system.
Friends – They need us and we need them. Some of us are in self-isolation and are savoring the quiet time. Others are getting stir crazy and missing social contact. Others are out with peaceful protesting. Call your friends. Stay in touch. Write a note. Forward something funny to a friend. And check-in on folks that are sensitive to depression or anxiety. Focus on caring for others to reduce your stress.
Fun – Create fun in your life or find it elsewhere, go online. Create a family video and post it or send it to other family members. Make it a competition on who can have the most fun. Did someone say dance contest? Have your kids make positive signs and post them on your front door. Teach your dog some new tricks. Watch You Tube videos of your favorite comedian. Laugh. Laugh with others.
Mudge Nudge – As you make positive progress, take a moment to give yourself credit for making improvements.
